Western seas are wild. They are perilous and unforgiving. The only safe anchorage for over 200 km was in Macquarie Harbour and its small bays. When Strahan was a rivalling port for railways and mines, men would head out for months steaming around the dangerous coastlines delivering goods and services. Upon their return the Old Sea Dogs were eager to retreat to calm and quiet places. Many of the cabins within Lettes Bay were owned by these boatmen, who used worn corrugated iron and strong local timbers to build their hideaways. And like the nature of the men, the strong timbers and old iron are resilient. These cabins still stand today.

This charming cabin’s interior will pleasantly surprise you.. with welcoming tones and tasteful furnishings that complement the tranquil surroundings. Even our Tasmanian oak bed has been custom designed a little higher than usual to make the most of the view. It also has a large draw underneath for your personal belongings.
Whatever the weather, your tranquil little Salt Box will delight. Watch the stormy seas come rolling in or wake up with the sun skipping across the water. It’s never boring the view from your window.
Enjoy lazy breakfast’s in bed or from the breakfast bench at your window and indulge in lazy afternoons by the water’s edge quaffing Tasmanian wine and gourmet goodies.
A fabulous firepot will have your inner child relishing the roasting of marshmallows under the starlight. We offer complimentary port to enjoy too. (please see note to the right about the fire pot).
